Battle of Barren hill May (1778):
Lafayette disobeyed his orders to keep on moving while harassing the British army, and built a camp at Barren hill. Sure enough, the british army, 16000 men strong, attacked barren hill from two sides. Lafayette had stationed general Poor and Potter to cover his flank. Lafayette, along with general Potter and general Poor, were determined to defend the fort with only 2100 men and 5 cannons. After Lafayette had come to the conclusion that they would not be able to de To escape, Lafayette had to come up with a solution. His answer was to line up some of his men in a single line in the forest who were ordered to shoot a the the british. Because they were spread out, their force looked much bigger than it actually was. this confused the British, causing them to regroup and give the Americans just enough time to escape. To ensure this, Lafayette ordered some men to stay back, shoot at the British, then retreat to valley forge with the rest of the army, which is where George Washington when the americans shot at the British who had been split up into their proper regiments, and were in the forest, the British became even more confused and began to shoot at each other.
